There is NO meeting tonight (Tuesday, Dec 18th)…..Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 8th.

To start the season off I have a couple of items of information to pass along to you….

Coffee I am very pleased to inform you that Laura Carbonneau and Kelly Morris have offered to coordinate the coffee break for the coming season.  It should be noted this is for coffee only as they will not maintaining a list for people to bring goodies.  Goodies however will not be turned away should you be inclined to bring some.  The rules for coffee…..coffee is free if you bring your own cup, if not it will cost you $1.00 to buy a cup.  The good news is this coming Tuesday, coffee is free whether whether you supply a cup or not.  Laura will outline her program on Tuesday night.

Registration Last week a number of people downloaded the registration form from our website and brought it completed to the meeting.  This save a lot of time with the registration process.  If you are coming to the meeting for the first time this week, it would be appreciated if you followed this process and downloaded the application form from the website.  You can find in under Club Information – Membership Fees…..

 Photolife Magazine This year we are once again taking orders for the Photolife magazine.  The cost of the subscription is now &17:00.  We require a total of 20 to sign up before we can send in the list.  We are presently at 13.  We would like to send it in by the middle of October at the latest.  You may also wish to give a subscription as a gift.  The signup sheet is on the registration table. 

Workshop This week Lynda Miller will be conducting our first workshop of the year.  She will demonstrate the process on  how to transfer your photo images to a hard surface.  I have seen samples of her work and opportunities of this nature don’t come along very often.  The final product could certainly be used as gifts and that time of the year is not that far off.  She will be supplying materials to work with.  For those of you that didn’t get your photos to her by the deadline, she will be bringing extras.  The cost for the materials will be $5.00 cash only please. 

Evaluation Night October 9th is our first Evaluation night of the year….All entries print and digital must be submitted for judging by Oct 2nd.   Prints are to be brought to the meeting and given to Lynn Yule and digital submissions must entered by using the process that is outlined on our website.  Last week we had a bit of a Q&A on submission requirements, however to clarify the procedures a more formal presentation witll made at the meeting of Sep 25th. 

Future Workshops Last year it became evident that some members wanted to learn more about photography and their camera.  This year we have programmed 3 handson workshops on the operation of your camera.  On Sep 25 and Oct 2nd, Bill Robertson will be presenting workshops on Camera Basics and on Oct 16th, Tom Kliner will be presenting a workshop on Demystifying Cameras.  So if you still have questions on just what your camera can do for you, then mark these dates ion your calendar.

Photo Contest  Shutterbugs have a shot at $10,000…..enter the 2012 National Geographic Photo Contest for a chance to win $10,000 and a trip to the Washington, D.C. headquarters to participate in their annual  National Geographic Photography Seminar.  Photos can be submitted in three categories; people, places and nature.  The deadline is Nov 30th.  See ngm.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/photo-contest for details.  Entry fee $15.00 US.  (reprinted from Vancouver, Sunday Province)

 The hours of display for both days is from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m…….the price of admission is a “toonie”.  lIf you are a lover of the arts, this is a display you will not want to miss….

Membership Fees

This year, there are a couple of significant financial changes that you should be aware of…..the cost of membership is now $75.00 per single membership; $140.00 per couple and $50.00 per student.  The $20.00 increase was necessary to cover the cost of our liability insurance policy.

Photo Life Magazine

The other increase pertains to those of you that subscribe to the “Photolife” magazine.  The cost of the subscription is now $17.00 per year.   We require a minimum of 20 subscriptions for this subscription rate to be valid.  October 2nd will be the cutoff date.  You may also wish to give a subscription as a gift.  There will be a special signup sheet on the registration table.

Executive Committee

Your Executive Committee has been busy throughout the summer months in preparation for the forthcoming season…..this year will see more emphasis placed on “hands-on” instruction in the use of your camera.  This will be done both in the meeting room and on field trip type workshops.  Our fall schedule is now posted on our website.

For the photographer that may be looking for a bargain…..Mike Breakey is holding a garage sale tomorrow Saturday, May 12th at his residence, which is located in the Okanagan Golf Club area.  I understand that if you are into photoshop, there are going to be some photoshop publications available at bargain prices.

Is our awards night…..if you were unable to pick up your tickets for this event at last Tuesday’s meeting, they will be available for you at the door.  If you were not on the list for tickets and still wish to do so, please contact Lynn Yule .  Festivities get underway at 7:00 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club in the Martin Avenue Community Centre located at 1434 Graham Street.

Boat for Hope festivities are happening at the Kelowna Yacht Club…this is a great opportunity to support this worthwhile cause sponsored by the Yacht club in support of Variety Village.  Regarding further information contact me by either e-mail or phone.

Model Shoot

Lens and Camera have offered to coordinate another model shoot for our members…..the time and place have yet to be determined, however I am taking names of those that are interested.  Contact me by either e-mail or phone.

Time: 7:00 pm to approx 10:00 pm

Meeting place will be at 6:45 pm near the Concessions and Washroom buildings at Tugboat Bay. This is over the foot bridge from Water St at the Dolphins statue where the fireworks are typically held.

I’ve chosen a Wed evening as the Kelowna Yacht club does a weekly sailing race which will add to the photo opportunities.

Personally I’ve done a lot of shooting in the area and there is literally something for everyone no matter what your gear. For those not as familiar with the area, starting at the Rotary Marsh conservation area there is typically plenty of wildlife followed with plenty of ‘street’ photography. As you walk South along the lakeshore there is Tugboat Bay, the Dolphins, Delta Grand, the Boardwalk, Island Stage, Kelowna Yacht Club, Jim Stuart Park, Fintry Queen, the Sails, Kerry and City Park all within walking distance

I would anticipate a good turn out with many opportunities as well as photographic abilities. I have a lot of experience shooting in the area and will assist wherever I can with camera settings etc. as I’m sure anyone else will too. Opportunity from macro to extreme telephoto and everything in between!

This is also an excellent place to do some twilight/night photos. I’ve done a lot of those here too and I’m planning on staying till about 10:00 pm for anyone who’s interested.

Clean your sensors and lenses, pack up your gear and we’ll see you there. Depending on what you plan on shooting suggestions may be to bring a mono or tripod, flash for that catch light in the eye, remote trigger or know how to use the self timer function on your camera. Doesn’t hurt to brush up on your camera’s manual before heading out, you’d be surprised how much information is in there especially after you’ve used your camera awhile and see things in use.

Afterwards I would like to invite you to send me a few of your favorite shots to be included in a slideshow for club presentation when we return in the fall.

Please keep in mind that we will be along the waterfront and even in late June the temps drop considerably during the evening so please dress comfortably.

There are water fountains in the area as well as washrooms and for those of us that are not as physically fit as we used to be there are also numerous benches conveniently located.
